Confused Are these two terms synonymous?

No they are not.
It is my understanding that any Edition can have more than one printing. However, if something is changed or if a long period of time elapses and a book is out of print then the next printing would be a subsequent edition.
So a First Edition/ second Printing would be more valuable than a Second Edition = unless, of course, there were something about the Second Edition - like new illustrations by a well known artist - that would make it more valuable.
So now I have confused things even more!!

In little golden books second printing and second edition are one in the same. In the past they put first edition or A back on books that they changed...cover, illustrator or pages inside. I have many titles in my collection that have 3-6 A or first editions. During the war in the 40's they did print war edition books that say first printing, May 1944; second printing Sept, 1944 and so on.These books were shortened to 24 pages because of the war.
I am not familiar with other childrens books or printings of other kinds of books only lgb.
