I believe that the book you're looking for is "The Ginghams: The Backward Picnic." My copy says that the story is by Joan Chase Bowden, and illustrated by JoAnne E. Koenig/Creative Studios I, Inc. There isn't an ISBN, but the copyright is by Western Publishing Company, Inc., 1976. Hope this helps.

When I was a child (mid 70's) my Mom used to read me a book that I thought was called the Gingham's Picnic, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. Has anyone ever heard of it? and if so, where can I get a copy of it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
