all I can remember is the little house had big buildings squeezed up against its sides, and at some point its happy again out by itself on a little hill... it at one point had a record with it...

Hi--I have a Weekly Reader Children' s Book Club edition of a book called "The Little House", written and illustrated by Virginia Lee Burton, c. 1942 and renewed 1969, (not a Little Golden Book, it's hardbound and larger in size). The story contains the elements of your description and may be the one you remember. I got it at a thrift shop some years ago; this one was not part of a book-and-record set. Hope this helps; I know this question was posted over a year ago.
