This is my first time in any sort of Forum; if I break any rules, I apologize. Please tell me if I do anything wrong.

I'm not a collector or an owner; I'm just trying to learn the title of a book I remember. It's about a small black dog who wears a straw hat and lives (I think) in a tree trunk. A small boy comes to visit and the dog makes him supper. I seem to recall that the dog smokes a pipe.

Dores anyone know the title?

I checked out the story and many things you stated are there but he lives in a two story doghouse in the garden.
